Not really confident that it might work out Anat started painting Chamodi, her cat. She is used painting city views or people so she was surprised how easy this painting came out of her hands. I personally think painting a cat is kind of a challenge because it can easily result in sentimental tackiness. As you can see that’s absolutely not the case. The cat has personality and (as you might know by now) I just love her use of paint. Slightly dirty colors, drippings, pieces of open canvas, beautiful!
2011, Anat Zehavi, Chamodi, Oil on canvas, 40x40cm
Anat is really happy with the result. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
This new painting by Anat of a parc in The Hague “Het Haagse Bos” is showing spring has started in Holland.
2011, Haagse Bos, Oil on Canvas
As you might know I’m a beekeeper. Ever since I was a kid I really loved insects and lately beekeeping is the way to express this.
In my opinion insects are the biggest succes of evolution. There were bugs before mankind existed and I suppose there will be bugs long time after we are an extinct species. I just hope there will be a beetle to read this message at that stage in time. It might even think we were intelligent after all;-)
In my art I often used insects. Here are some exaples. Hope you will like them as much as I do.

Anat Zehavi, Den Haag III, 2011
Anat Zehavi, Den Haag IV (finished work), 2011
As promised here is the the next phase of the Den Haag city view (click for big).
2011, Anat Zehavi, Den Haag, Next phase
Skies are floating in, buildings are built up in paint, the car in the back gets substance.
Anat started a new painting and in an attempt to drag you into the process of creation we will add new pictures to this blog at different stages.
2011, Anat Zehavi, Den Haag
Here you can see the first “drawing” on canvas. Reality must be struck at first instance because Anat uses the open canvas for the light in her paintings. What I really like in this stage is the way the perspective sucks me into the picture. I’m curious to see the next phase..
People have a natural tendency towards herd behavior. Ironically this leads to similar behavior in all kind of subcultures. A definition I found is: In sociology, anthropology and cultural studies, a subculture is a group of people with a culture (whether distinct or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong.
Ghislaine, 120x120cm, Acrilic on canvas
I made a series of paintings about punks, one of them was particularly interesting (i.e. different) and part of a very small subculture. To give an idea; she was a former dancer, a vampire fanatic, had her fangs lengthened by a freaky dentist, got piercings all over the place and she and her boyfriend slept in coffins. Call me a freak but I thought this was very inspiring!
The incensed, 120x100cm, Acrylic on canvas
I discovered that there is a small group of people in Den Haag that are part of this specific subculture. To be a part of it, one needs to follow conventions. Dress in a certain way, act according to the groups interaction code, those kind of things. You cannot attend a meeting wearing jeans without being laughed at..
Ghislaine, 80x120cm, Acrylic on canvas
I guess there is little difference with for instance being a business person or a banker. To play the game in these and other subcultures the least you need to do is to dress properly and have a certain appetite for blood…;-)
